Harpo från Duvemåla

Long before the musical “Kristina från Duvemåla” was devised, another Swedish artist had already used Vilhem Moberg’s Emigrants series of novels as a musical inspiration. Harpo released the song “On The Other Side Of The Atlantic” in 1986, both as a single (in Swedish and English) and as an album track on the under-rated “London” album.

I was surprised to find the English version of this beautiful song on Youtube. Someone has done a great job of putting together a slide show of scenes from the Emigrants movie as well as modern day immigrants.

They were poor, didn’t have anything
Hunger and thirst, what else could the future bring
They left the old world far behind
Didn’t know what they would find

On the other side of the Atlantic
They were looking for a new kind of life
Maybe it’s the same today
We are looking for a new kind of life
On the other side of the Atlantic
They were looking for a new kind of life

They never gave up, so it seems
Bright hopes, impossible dreams
The bible has said, search and you will find
So they left the old world far behind

On the other side of the Atlantic…

Maybe it’s the same today
We are looking for a new kind of life

On the other side of the Atlantic…

Maybe it’s the same today
We are looking for a new kind of life

This is a great song – and video. Looks like we now know who Björn & Benny stole the idea from for Kristina från Duvemåla.

Yes, it was on the Igloo label.

The single was the Swedish version of the song (På andra sidan Atlanten) with the English version on the b-side. There was also a 12″ single with a dance version.

My copies are in storage so I can’t check the catalogue number. According to this link, the catalogue number of the 7″ single is IRS 005.

The English version of the song was also included on the album commonly known as “London” although the cover implies that it is simply called “Harpo”.

I have the album in easy reach and the catalogue number is IRL 001. It’s a very good album and it’s a shame that it isn’t available digitally.

    Hello.
Holy Shit! I finally found this song “On The Other Side Of The Atlantic”
I’ve searched for it from time to time in years but never found a single thing
and here it is. I remembered the song from when I was about 15 years old and I
remembered the melody clearly and the vocal lines “On The Other Side Of The Atlantic They Were Looking For A New Kind Of Life” but no one seemed to knew about this song. And here it is 23years later. I’m turning 38 in May. Thank you very much and God Bless you. Being a singer and a musician myself I think I will do a newrecording of this very beautiful song. Truly underrated, where did it go? Here it is, god bless ha ha ha ha ha!!!

    Best regards n Take care
