I settled down this evening to watch an episode of the classic comedy, Fawlty Towers. Yes, I’ve seen them all before but it is just one of those shows which is just as funny no matter how many times you’ve seen it. Tonight it was one of my favourite episodes, The Hotel Inspectors guest starring the legendary Bernard Cribbins.
Imagine my horror to discover that the evil Channel 7 had hacked the episode to bits so they could fit in the commercials. They seem to think that Australian TV audiences are morons that can only cope with watching TV in 30 minute or 60 minute blocks. Seeing as an episode of Fawlty Towers runs for 30 minutes, they chop it to fit in the commercials rather than let it run for say 35 to 40 minutes as they would do in the UK or Sweden.
Yes, TV commercials are essential to keep a network running but they should not take priority over the programming. Advertising is meant to support the programming not the other way round.
Whenever Channel 7 or 9 or 10 start to cry poor, it is getting impossible to feel any sympathy because they are getting exactly what they deserve. No wonder more and more people are downloading their favourite TV shows because it is becoming the only way to watch a program uncut and on time.
And a note to Channels 7 and 9 – stop your childish squabbling and pathetic attempts to make each other look bad. No one cares!
