LaGaylia

lagaylia

LaGaylia (one word, capital ‘L’ and capital ‘G’) is an American singer who has settled in Sweden. She moved there in 2001.

I first discovered LaGaylia in 2004 when she appeared in Melodifestivalen singing the disco song It’s In The Stars. She appeared agin the following year with the power ballad Nothing At All (although there is quite a funky remix available). I remember being struck by her incredibly soulful voice. I got both songs on their respective Melodifestivalen CDs and I remember scouring the web to see if there was anything else by this amazing singer but I had no luck.

Recently Gustav sent me the link to the following clip and once again I was mesmerised. It’s her version of a Swedish hit from last year called Curly Sue.

This time, I searched for her again and was a lot more successful. I was excited to discover that LaGaylia had released an album in 2007 called Uncovered and that it was available to buy on iTunes along with some non-album singles.

The album is fantastic, a collection of soul, disco and a bit of funk with many of the songs written or co-written by LaGaylia herself. Love it, love it, love it.

I also discovered that back in the 90s, LaGaylia had contributed two fabulous songs to the soundtrack of the Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone movie, The Specialist. Shower Me With Love (which charted on the Billboard dance charts at number 12) and Slip Away (which LaGaylia actually performed in the movie as a bar singer). A quick visit to eBay and I was able to secure the soundtrack for a reasonable price.

Although her number of released recordings is relatively small, LaGaylia makes lots of live appearances, TV performances and has also appeared in musicals and the such.

LaGaylia’s most recent release is her version of the disco classic Le Freak on the soundtrack to the animated film Disco-Daggarna (English title = Sunshine Barry & The Disco Worms).

I will continue to follow LaGaylia’s career and am hopeful of many more albums of the same calibre as Uncovered. Don’t forget to check it out on iTunes along with the following links.
