I actually found this difficult since there were so many great albums in 2008. I limited it to albums of new music that were released in 2008. This can include cover albums but not compilations, reissues or live albums. I also did not include any albums from the last couple of years that I only discovered in 2008.
10. Funplex – The B52s
They’re back and they still sound great. Another fun album (the title is a give away) in the way that only the B52s could get away with.
9. Kleerup – Kleerup
A great dance album featuring such great female lead vocalists as Robyn, Lykke Li, Titiyo, Lisa Millberg, Marit Bergman and Neneh Cherry. Kleerup has a unique and compelling sound.
8. Songs Of Love & Loss Volume 2 – Tina Arena
It may be a covers album but Tina sure knows how to pick great songs to sing like “Oh Me, On My”, “Only Women Bleed” and “Nights In White Satin”. Her swing version of Blondie’s “Call Me” is worth checking out.
7. Just A Little Lovin’ – Shelby Lynne
Shelby Lynne’s tribute to the great Dusty Springfield. Shelby hasn’t tried to imitate Dusty but has put her own spin on some Dusty classics. I love the warmth and depth of this album and it really feels like you are at an intimate live performance.
6. Heavy Rotation – Anastacia
I didn’t even know that Anastacia was back in the studio so this album came as a pleasant surprise. More of her powerhouse vocals in a style that she has dubbed SPROCK, a merging of soul, pop and rock.
5. Letter From Egypt – Morten Harket
It’s been a long time since the a-Ha lead singer has put out an English solo album and it was well worth the wait.
4. Bring Ya To The Brink – Cyndi Lauper
Cyndi is a legend. This time she brings us a modern dance album and what can I say? It’s fantastic.
3. The Parkdale Sessions – Kyle Riabko
A Canadian singer/songwriter who is amazing. Wait until the world discovers him. This is his second album of acoustic pop, full of vocal hooks and memorable songs.
2. Out Front – Bobby Flynn
A kind of folksy soul from an Australian Idol contestant from 2006. Bobby has a unique sound and a voice that just takes me over every time.
1. Rockferry – Duffy
Duffy seemed to come out of nowhere and take over the world in 2008. I love the retro soul feel of this album and it seems that a lot of other people do too.
