Meme or not meme

I was over at my friend Andrew’s blog and he referred to doing a meme – you know one of those things that goes around the internet that asks you questions. They seem very popular at sites like MySpace and Facebook. My first reaction was wtf is a meme. I had never heard of the word before. Is it derived from the concept of me since today’s society does seem to be more about me, me, me? So I went to the font of all knowledge, Wikipedia, and got the following definition.

A meme, as defined within memetic theory, constitutes a theoretical unit of cultural information, the building block of cultural evolution or diffusion that propagates from one mind to another analogously to the way in which a gene propagates from one organism to another as a unit of genetic information and of biological evolution.

Now, I consider myself a reasonably intelligent kind of guy but that definition confused the hell out of me. Despite numerous rereadings, I still have no idea what it means. Looking further into the article, I saw examples that include chain mails, internet hoaxes and urban legends. Ah, I’m on safer ground now. And in relation to Andrew’s blog, it’s one of those things that goes around the internet that asks you questions.

So, having hurt my brain with all of that, I thought I may as well have a go at the one on Andrew’s blog. I did correct the Americanised spellings.

Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Wrapping paper although I don’t do a good job of it. I’m not like Will on Will and Grace who has ribbons and all that crap. It’s usually done in a hurry with sticky tape everywhere.

Real tree or Artificial?
I don’t do this anymore and haven’t for years. When I did, it was always plastic. In fact, I probably still have it stashed away in the storage centre. And I wonder why I have a problem with clutter?!?

When do you put up the tree?
See previous answer – never.

When do you take the tree down?
Why does everyone have to share this tree fetish? See previous answer.

Do you like eggnog?
Never tried it.

Favourite gift received as a child?
Do you know, I really can’t remember. I did get my first bike for Christmas. Was it my favourite? I guess it must have been because it’s the only one I remember. I do remember that it was orange and blue.

Or did I get it for my birthday? Gawd, forget this question, it just shows what a dreadful memory I have.

Do you have a nativity scene?
Um, no.

Hardest person to buy for?
My friend, Graeme. He is so fussy.

Easiest person to buy for?
Like Andrew, I can say me. I already have got my own present this year. The DVD box set of the third series of Doctor Who.

Mail or email Christmas cards?
I prefer mail but I am so slack, it usually ends up being email. With just over a week to go before Christmas, it looks like it will be email again this year.

Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
Can’t recall.

Favourite Christmas Movie?
That would be Gremlins hands down. Here’s the famous Attack of the Christmas Tree scene (I wish I could find the scene where the Gremlins are singing Christmas carols).

Before Gremlins, it was Santa Claus Conquers The Martians that Adelaide TV used to play every Christmas. Here is the 6.5 minute abridged version. Look out for the robot.

Favourite quote – “All this trouble over a fat, little man in a red suit” which probably sums up my attitude to Christmas. 🙂

When do you start shopping for Christmas?
I’ve only just started thinking about it and it’s only eight shopping days left!

Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?

Favourite thing to eat at Christmas?
Food. If I had to pick one thing then alcohol-soaked trifle.

Clear lights or coloured on the tree?
If I had a tree then it would be coloured. I love lots of colour and movement.

Favourite Christmas song?
For some reason I have always loved Silent Night although it can be quite nauseating. My favourite version is by Peter Jöback and is in Swedish. Its Swedish title is Stilla Natt.

I have a soft spot for Jingle Bell Rock.

Travel at Christmas or stay home?
Usually travel back to Adelaide. We’ve been to Waikiki for Christmas which was very different. This year it’s back to Adelaide.

Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?
Rudolph, Blitzen, Prancer (he must be the gay one with that name), Sleepy, Grumpy, Bashful, Doc… Oh I give up.

Angel on the tree top or a star?
As already mentioned a number of times, no tree. But I guess I suppose an angel. There’s something poignant about an angel with a tree up his/her bum. 😉

Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
Morning unless it’s the present I got for myself.

Most annoying thing about this time of year?
Christmas and the crass commercialisation. As the quote above said, “All this trouble over a fat, little man in a red suit”

Favourite ornament theme or colour?
There’s something appealing about shiny balls. My favourite colour is green.

Favourite for Christmas dinner?
I’m not a foodie so I’m not particularly fussed.

What do you want for Christmas this year?
Peace and quiet but I doubt I’ll get it. Not really sure what I want. There are a few DVDs on my wish list but nothing I really have to have. How about a business class trip to Stockholm?
